Dilemma
I have new developments to add to my current life situation, and with these developments come further questions and concerns. As I mentioned before, I submitted my resume to a school in Lynwood, WA that is hiring a first grade teacher. I recently received an email response thanking me for my resume and inviting me to fill out an application. Good news so far, right? However, in this email, the...

About that quote: Right now I’m saying never. I hurt. I’ll be waiting for someone to come along and make me.

I need to make some decisions
Here’s where I am in my current state of life. I need to make some decisions. Decision #1: I graduate in May and finish up my teaching contract in June here in Los Angeles. Do I: a. stay on at my school and live in LA for at least another year? (Pros: I like my school. I will be free to move away from Gardena and live in the LA neighborhood of my choice, perhaps closer to my place of...

...just in case
If that last post left you concerned for my salvation because I might have become some sort of radical relativist with no concept of a transcendent element of truth, I also like what Robert Frost has to say: We dance round in a ring and suppose, But the Secret sits in the middle and knows. I’ll keep supposing. If we get dizzy we can take a break. The truth will still be there....

the community of truth
Though I have my qualms with Parker Palmer, author and motivator, he has some wise words to share in his book, The Courage to Teach, which I am required to read for my graduate class on catechetical leadership: The community of truth, far from being linear and static and hierarchical, is circular, interactive, and dynamic…I know of no field, from science to religion, where what we regard...

You can call me "Veteran Teacher"
I’m done with my first year of teaching!! I made it through! Yesterday I said goodbye to the 18 most beautiful, brilliant, hilarious, frustrating, adorable, gracious 7-year-olds that I have ever known. They taught me so much! Hopefully I returned the favor. I didn’t cry, but when we watched our first grade end-of-the-year picture slideshow, my eyes got a little misty. I’m so...

Special Ed
It’s about freakin time! I started summer school on Monday. I am taking a class on how to teach students with learning disabilities and other various special needs. It’s about freakin time! I have probably 7 or 8 of these such students and they’ve been sitting in my classroom all year! I’m finally learning how to make accommodations for them to give them equal access to...

New Management
St. Paul School is semi-officially under new management now. Her name is Mrs. Wecshler. She has requested to come every Wednesday until school lets out even though her contract does not officially kick in until July…my kind of lady! She is a Harvard graduate currently working on her doctorate from Loyola Marymount. She’s Canadian and French is her first language. These things are all...

Update
What’s this? I forgot I had a blog. Funny. Hello dear readers! I’ve missed you. Here’s an update on my life: 1. I have successfully (or did they say “sufficiently”?) completed my first year of grad school! I’m half way to a Master’s degree. Everyone may call me “Master” in one year’s time. 2. I have 6 weeks left until I will finally be...

what we DO know
I love talking to Paige. If you have never had a real conversation with Paige Hustead, you have not lived. She is full of grace and wisdom and love, and she consistently reminds me of who of I am and what I stand for. We had a conversation tonight about faith and life. Both of us are in this place of questioning and pondering. We both love God and want to serve God, but we admittedly do not know...

powerless.
I feel so powerless sometimes. It’s not like everyday at my job I am able to maintain a sense of the big picture of what I’m doing down here and how my work is affecting the lives of my students. But when something out of the ordinary happens to me or to one of my students that jolts me out of my daily routine, I catch a glimpse of what it was I set out here to do. I came down to LA...

Ahhhh
My roommate’s principal was stabbed by a student today. He’ll be fine…none of the knife wounds were fatal. But everyone’s a bit shaken up. Pray for teachers…and pray for their students.

We Have a Dream
On Monday we will celebrate the life and work of an amazing man, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Since I have a math teachers’ in-service day tomorrow and no students, I got to teach about MLK today! I will never forget the looks on my kids’ faces as I was reading to them about the civil rights movement. They unanimously agreed that of course it’s not fair to make people sit...

Moms are so quotable
You know that song “Short People” by Randy Newman? Yeah, it’s a little un-PC. Well anyway, the lyrics sing “short people got no reason to live”…boo right? Well my mom is hilarious and she thought the words were “short people are EASY TO LIFT” !!!! HAHAHA! I love you, mom. So much. Thanks for the laughs…always.
